Well, sledging instances are an act to piss the f*** out of your opposition hoping that they get frustrated and do something silly.
From friendly banter to sarcastic replies, from challenging remarks to insulting comments, the purpose of sledging is to distract the opposing team and create tension in the game.
Here are some crazy sledging instances which will either make you laugh or make you cringe!
1. When Parthiv Patel Had A Few Words To Say To Steve Waugh In His Last Test Match!
One of the biggest names in Australian cricket is the former captain Steve Waugh. Not many people had guts to question his game on the field. Well, remember Parthiv Patel, our very own ‘baby-faced’ wicketkeeper-batsman? He was ‘cool’ enough to comment on Waugh when he walked in to bat in his last test match. “Come on, just one more of your famous slog-sweeps before you finish,” quipped Patel. Waugh without hesitation replied, “Respect me for when I made my debut you were still in your nappies.” BURN!
2. When A Young Sachin Tendulkar Was Sledged In Pakistan By Pakistan.
The Little-Master was never known to be aggressive with his words, he always let his bat do the talking. The year was 1989, Sachin Tendulkar was not even old enough to get a driving license and was facing the best bowlers in Pakistani cricket. As the Pakistani crowd jeered and mocked Sachin holding out placards saying “”Dudh Pita Bachcha ..ghar jaake dhoodh pee”, (hey kid, go home and drink milk), Sachin sent the then young leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed hiding for cover after hitting him for 2 sixes in an over.Frustrated by the youngster’s audacity Mushtaq’s mentor Abdul Qadir challenged Sachin saying “Bachchon ko kyon mar rahe ho? Hamein bhi maar k dikhao” (Why are you hitting kids? Try and hit me.) After this, the over read 6,0,4,6,6,6! Wasn’t that legen-wait for it-daryyyy?
3. King Kohli VS James Faulkner !
Sadda Dilli boy, Virat Kohli made his 24th century and became the fastest to score 7000 runs in ODIs at MCG on Sunday, 17th January 2016, but it was actually a perfect response to a sledge that went really viral! James Faulkner was trying hard to throw him off his focus by making snide remarks, but Kohli’s perfect response was – “You’re wasting your energy. There’s no point. I’ve smashed you enough in my life. Just go and bowl,” said Kohli, waving Faulkner back to the bowling crease.
4. Sir Viv Richards For A Reason!
In a different era of Sir Viv Richards, paceman Greg Thomas learned the truth of why Sir is after all so great as his prefix claimed to be. Thomas was bowling to Richards, in a county match in England. After Richards played and missed a few balls, Thomas said: “It’s red, it’s round. Now, f****ing hit it!”.This obviously was not taken well by the then young and angry Viv Richards who proceeded to hit the next ball out of the ground. Richards: “You know what it looks like now go and get it.” LOL! Smashed through the covers for a boundary and HOW!
5. Because There Are Always Sledging Instances in an Indo-Pak Match.
The heat around the neighbours’ rivalry surrounding cricket has always been there and stakes are always higher when it’s the World cup!Javed Miandad on one such occasion during the 1992 World Cup complained: “Insaan khel rahe hain janwar nahin” (Human beings are playing not animals) to Indian wicket- keeper Kiran More after a close shave run-out chance. Javed then completely lost it due to excessive appealing by the Indian Wicketkeeper and suddenly started jumping up and down, face distorted imitating Kiran More’s appealing. A sight to behold! Sheer comedy.
6. When An Aussie Fielder Threatened To Break Ravi Shastri’s Head!
Aussies swear by sledging as is commonly known in the cricketing world. This one instance they were at the receiving end, however! The former player/director of the Indian team was batting, when he hit a ball towards Mike Whitney who was the 12th man in the Aussie team.Whitney: “If you leave the crease I’ll break your f***ing head”.Shastri didn’t bat an eyelid before replying: “If you could bat as well as you can talk you wouldn’t be the f***ing 12th man”. Wow, Take A Bow Ravi Shastri! That was indeed witty and Cric Crak is not surprised that Ravi went on to be a commentator.
Well, in the end, we think let’s not be too sensitive! Sledging Instances are a part of the game and can be used to your advantage or disadvantage in case you are an Andrew Flintoff. As long as they don’t cross that thin line we think there is absolutely no problem with sledging.
Cric-Crak thinks sometimes you win, sometimes you learn; it’s just a sport at the end of the day!
