While there is no doubt that cricket is the most popular sport in India , interestingly there have also been a few cricketers who have been rewarded with Government jobs/ positions looking at their popularity.
A major role of any Government is also relationship building and it seems like a win-win as many Indians look up to these cricketers as role models and love to happily follow their advice. Most of these players have achieved their position not by studying for any exams but due to sheer popularity and more importantly by setting strong examples by their on and off-field behavior.
