The IPL is without a doubt the leading domestic T20 tournament in the world due to the sheer economics and quality of personnel involved. While the IPL still draws flak from some quarters in India; most experts are of the opinion that it has been beneficial in taking India’s white ball game a notch higher.
Every year the tournament is taken with utmost importance by the players as the amount of spotlight involved means that doing well here can get one instant acclaim and chances of making the Indian squad increase plenty fold. This year being a World T20 year means that every Indian player who is on the fringes would be feeling it’s doubly important to have a great season in order to have a crack at making the World T20 squad.
However, due to the global pandemic (Corona Virus), there is still no certainty whether the tournament will be held this year or the Union Government in unison with the BCCI decide to pull the plug. There are various global sporting events that have already been cancelled or postponed indefinitely like the Serie A, Australian Grand Prix, ATP tour etc. The BCCI has already announced that the IPL 2020 will be a truncated affair and at best would start on the 15th April. Having said that, should situation in India worsen there will be no choice but to cancel the tournament due to the limited window available.
Here is a list of 5 players who would be itching to get out in the IPL and perform in order to get in the flight to Australia for the WT20 later this year.
1) MS Dhoni – The talisman right-hander who captains the very successful CSK franchise would be hoping that the show goes on as the selectors and coach Ravi Shastri have already announced that the only way the ex-India captain can make it to the World T20 is by light the IPL in fire by his performance with the bat.
2) Sanju Samson – While it does look like KL Rahul has cemented his place as the batsman-wicketkeeper for the ICC WT20, India would still require a back up keeper for the world tournament. As things stand, Rishab Pant might be a little ahead of Samson, an outrageously good IPL would put Rajasthan Royals player in a great position to grab the reserve wicket keeper slot.
3) Ravichandran Ashwin – The Chennai born off-spinner has been out of white ball cricket for a while and at this stage it does look like the team has moved on. The right-hander is a like for like when it comes to Washington Sundar and the team management has already stated that they are looking for spinners who have the ability to wield the willow as well and therein lies the opportunity for Ashwin should he have a highly successful IPL.
