The possible return of AB De Villiers is being followed around the world with a keen eye. Such is the talent and the presence of the ‘Superman’ of cricket that he can single-handedly tilt the balance of the game. With both the parties, i.e the new South African team management led by Graeme Smith; and AB De Villiers being so vocal about the latter’s re-integration into the Proteas team for the upcoming ICC World T20, it just feels like a matter of time.
However, if one were to believe former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes’, the process of re-integration will not be as straight-forward as it seems. Rhodes, who is regarded by many as one of the best fielder’s to have graced the game, stated that it will be very harsh on the players that will miss out and it also sets a very wrong precedent. The South African team just looks like its turning a leaf and would be really encouraged by the performance of youngsters like Rassie Van Der Dussen, Kyle Verreyne, Janemann Malan, Temba Bavuma and JJ Smuts in the recent 3-0 victory over a full-strength Australian Team. Asking any of these players to miss out would be very discouraging since their performance wouldn’t be the reason for them missing out.
The other issue that would arise according to Jonty Rhodes would that of setting the wrong precedence since the message that is going out is that if you are supremely talented then it’s necessary for you to play for your country day-in and day-out in order to represent them in the world tournaments. Having said that, Rhodes still believes that the precocious talent of De Villiers will be too hard to ignore and his inclusion will no doubt make South Africa a feared side in the ICC World T20 2020 to be held in Australia in October-November this year.
