In a tête-à-tête with Harsha Bhogle recently, Dinesh Karthik opened up and spoke about how we was left heartbroken when CSK opted for MSD over him in the first ever IPL auction in 2008. The Tamil Nadu player was the best batsman from his state at that time and therefore it was obvious that he felt his city-based franchise will opt for him.
The fidgety wicket-keeper said, “The first name I saw picked (by CSK in the first IPL auction) was MS Dhoni, for 1.5 million. He was sitting right down the corner from me. He didn’t even tell me a word that he was going to be picked by CSK. I guess he didn’t know, but that was the biggest dagger to my heart.” “Then I thought they’re going to pick me later. But it’s been 13 years and I’m still waiting for the elusive call from CSK,” he added.
Karthik was eventually picked for the capital based Delhi franchise where he had moderate success and since then has been a bit of journeyman, representing 6 different teams, until he was grabbed by KKR and made skipper. The closest he came to being picked for CSK was the last time he found himself in the auction pool, but his current franchise pipped the yellow army.
