Sachin Tendulkar is generally a person you don’t associate with sledging, be it him indulging in the act or the opponents trying to ruffle the master. In fact, if Brett Lee is to be believed, when India used to play Australia, Glenn McGrath who was the leader of the attack used to tell his fellow bowlers to refrain from sledging the master as it made him more determined.
Saqlain Mushtaq, the inventor of the doosra, a delivery that revolutionalised spin bowling, recently narrated an incident about sledging Tendulkar. It happened to be the 1997 edition of the annual Sahara Cup and the spin bowler was fresh in International cricket. He thought that sledging the legendary batsman would do the trick and help him make a name for himself.
However, much to his amazement, when he sledged the Mumbaikar, Sachin replied ‘I rate you high as a person and a player, I have never sledged you, why are you doing it? To this the off-spinner had no answer and in his own words he explained the feeling. “I got so embarrassed that I didn’t know what to say to him.”
