ICC threatens BCCI to take the hosting rights of the ICC World T20 in 2021 from them due to not getting tax exemptions

What started out as a deadline issue, has now become really serious and if reports in Times of India are to be believed, then the ICC has threatened to take away the hosting rights of the 2021 T20 World Cup from India die to its inability to get tax exemptions for the event from the Government of India. A similar issue has occurred when India hosted the 2016 World T20 and it has already taken a legal route.

Even in 2016 the BCCI weren’t able to take tax exemptions for the global event from the Government of India and as a result the ICC had withheld $23 million that was due for BCCI. The BCCI had on its part requested the tax exemptions from the Government and it had also declared the same in an AGM held a few months back.

The deadline to get the tax exemptions sorted was April 2020, but the BCCI requested a it to be extended to June 2020 in the wake of the lockdown. However the business of the ICC decilined to extend the deadline and thus began an ugly exchange of emails between the two parties. The ICC in one of the emails has reminded the BCCI that it has all the rights to snatch the hosting rights from India.
