ICC to take a call on the T20 World Cup on 29th March
The Covid-19 situation around the world is only getting bad to worse and that has led to many global events of great magnitude to be deferred. The latest development on that front has been Canada publicly stating that should the 2020 Tokyo Olympics go an as per schedule, they wouldn’t be sending their athletes to participate. This has effectively led to a chain reaction and one other country that has taken such a bold action is Australia. The country is in a complete lockdown and Prime Minister Scott Morrison has already asked the public to expect a complete shutdown till as long as 6 months.
The Australian Football League, which is a game most loved by the masses of the sport loving nation has also been suspended indefinitely. The other major event that is to take place in the country later this year is the ICC World T20. The annual meeting of the ICC was earlier scheduled to be a 3-day affair in Dubai but due to Coronavirus it will be a teleconference held on the 29th March. According to the New Indian Express, a preliminary discussion on the fate of the World Cup is on the cards when the 18 member board including the 12 test playing nations meet via teleconference.
There is a huge possibility that like other global events, the 2020 ICC World T20 that has been scheduled to be held in October is deferred to a later date. However, if that were to happen then it could potentially lead to a showdown between Cricket Australia and the ICC as a delay in the ICC World T20 could impact the India-Australia series to be held down-under and any series involving the Indian team is a cash bonanza for the home board. All one can hope is that every decision that is taken by all parties concerned should have the health of the athletes at the core.
