India’s tour of Pakistan in 2004 was a very success one, be it the way the Indian team and fans were treated in Pakistan or the final result of the series. There were countless stories about the amazing hospitality of Pakistan’s public and the government of the time. However, Javed Miandad, the then coach of Pakistan team didn’t start proceedings very well.
Young Irfan Pathan had a wonderful debut tour of Australia and got the world talking about him. In an interview before the series, Miandad was asked about the threat of Irfan Pathan. The Pakistani legend gave quite a crass and cold response and said “Bowlers like Irfan Pathan are in every gully and mohalla of Pakistan”.
This statement apparently didn’t go down well with the Indian’s father and he expressed his wish to meet the Pakistani coach. When he finally met him, Miandad denied making any such remark. According to the all-rounder, his father just stood there calmly and said “I didn’t come here to say anything to you. I wanted to meet you as you were a wonderful player.”
