The iconic India Sri Lanka final at the Wankhede in 2011 will forever be etched in the memory of not only cricket lovers, but the whole nation. It was a landmark occasion and never before in the history of the world has such a huge spontaneous mass celebration taken place in the streets. Yes there indeed are a few advantages of having a humongous population. Who can ever forget MSD ‘finishing things off in style’ after he deposited a Nuwan Kulasekara delivery in the stands.
Apart from that six there are two iconic things that still captures the imagination of the fans. One is of course carrying Sachin Tendulkar on the shoulders of his team mates and the other is the toss, which bizarrely happened twice. People are still baffled as to what happened there and some Indian fans blame Sangakkara for the whole episode. In a recent interaction with Ravichandran Ashwin, Sangakkara himself set the record straight to rest all doubts.
“The match referee actually said I won the toss, Mahi said he did not. There was a little bit of confusion there and Mahi said let’s have another toss of the coin and heads went up again,” he said. “I am not sure whether it was luck that I won. I believe probably India might have batted if I had lost,” the former left-handed batsman further said.
