Veteran South Africa cricketer AB de Villiers has his fair share of experience when it comes to playing in the IPL. On numerous occasions, the power-hitter unleashed his destructive avatar to win games for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
He has now picked an all-time Indian Premier League XI and there are a few surprise omissions as well. De Villiers opened up on Cricbuzz and named his playing XI. He picked Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma as openers, adding Virat Kohli at no.3. Clearly, the top three look unshakable. Moving on, he picked himself next and named Ben Stokes at no.5- the England all-rounder’s prolific attributes across facets make him a vital component in the line-up.
MS Dhoni wears the captain’s armband and he has been assigned the glovework too. When it comes to spinners, De Villiers picked Ravindra Jadeja, who can chip in with a few lusty blows and bowl his quota of four overs quite effectively. To add to that, Jadeja is also a gun fielder which makes him a suitable addition in the side. Afghanistan’s spin sensation Rashid Khan finds a mention in the XI. Like Jadeja, Rashid is capable of scoring crucial runs down the order.
He then picks Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kagiso Rabada alongside Indian ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah. The playing XI looks solid on papers, however, one may question the absence of the likes of Hardik Pandya and Andre Russell. Another notable point is Kohli not being the skipper of the side. As a captain, Kohli is yet to win the silverware in the IPL and that might have played a part in De Villiers picking Dhoni as the captain of the side.
