Gautam Gambhir even after joining politics, which requires one to be diplomatically correct, hasn’t shirked his outspoken nature. In fact, the great thing about the Delhi southpaw is that he doesn’t mind calling a spade, spade and doesn’t care if that would cause controversy.
Over the years, this quality has made him a fan favourite and his verbal volleys pertaining to Afridi always plays right into the hands of the galleries. This time on his radar was the former chief selector, MSK Prasad for his selection of Vijay Shankar over Ambati Rayudu in the 2019 World Cup.
“Some of the decisions were absolutely shocking. Probably not picking Ambati Rayudu in the World Cup (squad). They couldn’t find the number four. One position they had to identify and couldn’t do it. Rayudu, look what happened to him in the WC. You picked him for two years..two years you made him bat at number four and just before WC you needed a 3D (player). Is that a kind of statement you wanna see from a chairman of selectors…we needed a 3Dcricketer.,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’
MSK Prasad has now responded to Gambhir’s criticism and explained his much talked about 3D statement. “Let me clarify. At the top, we didn’t have a batsman who could bowl. Rohit,Shikhar and Virat were the top 3 and there was nobody who could bowl. Someone like Vijay Shankar, who bats at the top of the order, and bowl seam up, in English conditions he might be helpful,” Prasad said in his rebuttal.
