Relive one of the greatest Indian victories over the mighty Aussies in 1996


The 1990’s was not the best decade for Indian cricket as far as the results were concerned. This was the decade when Sachin got out, the team fell like nine pins. It was not uncommon for fans to switch off their television once the master got out. Having said that, there were sporadic moments of brilliance and one such game happened between India and Australia in 1996 Titan Cup.

The match was being played at the legendary Chinnaswamy stadium and was a must win for both teams to meet South Africa in the final. Australia made 215 in the first innings on the back off a brilliant century by captain Mark Taylor. Tendulkar made a rollicking 88 before getting out with India still needing 56.

This is when the two local boys Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath got together with former’s mother and grandmother present in the crowd. The two ladies represented the whole of India with their expressions after every ball. Finally the two unlikely candidates with the bat pulled off a miracle when and the crowd erupted.
