Ever since MS Dhoni showed faith in Rohit Sharma and asked him to open the batting in the 2013 Champions Trophy, the Rohit-Shikhar combine has done wonders for Team India. The duo has amassed 4784 runs together in just 109 outings at a very healthy average of 44.87.
Both the players have been involved in a 100+ opening partnership together 13 times. However, back in 2013, Shikhar was a new entrant in the team and Rohit had just been asked to shun his middle order duty and open the batting for Team India. The natural hesitation of anyone doing the job for the first few times is to take the first ball.
So against South Africa when it was only the second time the duo were to open together, Rohit asked Shikhar if he would take first ball, but the Delhi player flatly refused. Rohit while reminiscing the incident said “He’s an idiot, what can I say. He doesn’t like to face the first ball. He likes to take on the spinners, but he does not like to take on the fast bowlers.” However the Mumbaikar did add that now the two are really close and a comfortable with each other.
