Rohit Sharma reveals how ignoring MS Dhoni’s brotherly advise helped him register his maiden Double Hundred In ODI Cricket

Remember Rohit Sharma’s first ODI double hundred ever? Now let’s rewind time a bit to 2nd November 2013, India vs Australia at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It was a batting paradise as usual like it usually is in Bangalore and the stage was set for the RO-Hit-Man show.

The next 3.5 hours were absolute carnage and Sharma Ji’s son smashed it to all parts of the ground and made it an evening to remember for each and everyone in the stadium. 209 of just 158 deliveries also made an evening to forget for the Australian Cricket Team as the right-handed batsman from India displayed sheer class while he completely stamped his authority over the might Aussies.

While he had Shikhar Dhawan who made ( 60) and Suresh Raina ( 28) for company, according to Rohit it was his parentship with Mahendra Singh Dhoni which helped him get to his first ODI double hundred but certainly not in the way we thought. Yes, you read that right! While off-course the Nagpur born opening batsman from India meant it in a light-hearted way, this is what he actually quoted-

“Suresh and I also shared a good partnership but lost Yuvi early. I batted with MS Dhoni till the 48th over. During the partnership, he kept on talking and discussing things with me. He said, ‘You are the set batsman and we want you to bat till the 50th over and I will be the one who takes chances’”.

Rohit further added, “He was telling me ‘you’re the set batsman and I want you to bat till the 48th, 49th of 50th over, because you can hit any bowler anywhere you want. So let me take chances, you just take a backseat, take singles, knock the ball in the gaps, and find the odd boundary if you can’,” And I just thought ‘no yaar, I’m seeing the ball really well and I might as well put pressure on the bowlers right here, right now’. Then I decided to just go after the bowlers. And I remember hitting Xavier Doherty for four sixes in an over,” he added.

It would be interesting to see if MSD has a response to his good friend’s latest allegation. It’s all in good spirit though as Rohit has always spoken about MS Dhoni in very high regard and while the Jharkhand born wicket-keeper batsman wanted to be an elder brotherly figure and keep their child safe, the young brother decided to have some fun which fortunately paid off!
