Sachin Tendulkar has captured the imagination of billion plus Indians since he was just 14 years old, when he had that record breaking partnership with his good friend Vinod Kambli. Tendulkar was marked out as one for the future by everyone who saw the lad wield his magic with the willow.
An interesting anecdote in the masters illustrious life is that the Indian cricket team chief selector in 1989, the late Raj Singh Dangarpur wanted a 15 year old Sachin in the Indian team but thought that the tour of West Indies might not be the best introduction to the highest level of the game. The fearsome West Indian attack at the time could potentially jolt the confidence of a baby-faced Sachin and that would not be in either the youngster’s or India’s best interest.
Eventually, the Bharat Ratna recipient made his India debut on the tour of Pakistan in November 1989 at a tender age of 16 and the rest as they say, is history. There have been many interviews in the Mumbaikars life but none quite like his first interview taken by the late actor Tom Alter.
The two things that standout in the interview straightaway are how young the genius looks and the confidence that he exudes at that age. The interview was done before the squad for the West Indian team in 1989 was selected and upon being asked he minded facing the tall and quick Caribbean fast bowlers, the youngster confidently replied that this was the right time to go.
