It is well known that Sourav Ganguly got given the captaincy at the very rock bottom in Indian cricket as the murky match fixing business led to a complete breakdown of trust between the Indian team and its most important asset; i.e the fans. Dada took the challenge head on and turned the face of Indian cricket, the fruits of which are still being tasted.
Not only did he manage to unearth youngsters like Yuvraj, Harbhajan, Zaheer etc, he also gave them the confidence to go and express themselves and play without fear. This confidence and youthful exuberance, coupled with the experience of the Fab 5 resulted in India dominating Australia in Australia and beating Pakistan in Pakistan.
During that historic tour of Pakistan, Sourav Ganguly was going through a lean patch with the bat and therefore he was a bit down. It was then when he was coming from the press conference that Sachin and Harbhajan told him that they didn’t want to play under his captaincy as he had given a statement that his team wasn’t playing well.
Ganguly who was flabbergasted first, and a bit upset later said that if that’s what the whole team wants then he will quit as captain and went and sat on his seat. Whilst he was upset, after 2 mins the whole team jumped and screamed ‘APRIL FOOLS’ and that pleased Ganguly no end. He said that it showed his teammates cared and it opened him up and from there on he went on to score good runs in that series.
