Speculation of Dhoni making it to the Indian squad for ICC World T20 to be held in Australia in October-November this year is rife. The sudden spike in discussion is due to the concerns that the IPL 2020 might actually be called off due to the pandemic that is Covid-19. Many including India coach Ravi Shastri believed that a great IPL would have probably been MSD’s best chance to reopen the India door for himself.
Recently ex-India opener Virender Sehwag had stated that he couldn’t see how Dhoni could return to the India squad due to an unbelievable white ball season by India’s current wicket-keeper batsman KL Rahul. That coupled with the fact that Dhoni might potentially be rusty due to a long sabbatical from professional cricket. The man from Ranchi last donned the India colours in the heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat to New Zealand.
Now another ex-India opener and recently retired Wasim Jaffer has thrown a contrarian point of view to his ex-test opening partner and backed the CSK skipper. Jaffer believes that if fit, and in form, Dhoni could prove to be a huge asset behind the stumps and in the lower order for the men in blue. In Jaffer’s view, it could free up KL Rahul from wicket-keeping duties and India could potentially play Rishab Pant as a batsman should India require a left-hander in the middle.
It will be interesting to see what the selection panel under new chief selector Sunil Joshi feel about the matter as it is them whose decision will actually matter. All one can say is that it will be very difficult to select all three wicket keepers mentioned by Jaffer and if past is any parameter to predict then an experienced player like Dhoni will be only selected in the squad if he’s a sure shot in the playing 11 and that’s where the team management’s views also become excruciatingly important in the matter.
What do you guys think? Should MS Dhoni be selected even if there is no IPL? Do let us know in the comments section.
