Mahendra Singh Dhoni has always been an outlier and never ever has he followed the rules. He has the most unusual technique while batting and even his wicket keeping is not from the text book. However, that hasn’t stopped him from being one of the most successful cricketers of all time.
His journey however started in 2005 at Vishakapatnam in what was his 5th ODI match. India were playing arch rivals Pakistan and Sourav Ganguly, like he usually did, backed a youngster and gave him the opportunity at number 3. From then on, Mahi didn’t look back and and went on to outbat Virender Sehwag in terms of strike rate, which was unheard of during those times.
MSD well and truly announced himself to the world and scored 148 off just 123 balls and meted out special treatment to all the Pakistani bowlers. That also ended India’s long quest for a wicket keeper who could bat. The rest, as they say, is history.
