Watch: Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar open the batting for the first time ever
October 23, 1996 is a date which has huge significance in not only Indian cricket, but world cricket. That was the day when for the first time the most successful opening partnership in the history of white ball cricket, opened the innings for the first time ever. The legendary pair of Sachin and Sourav walked out together for the first time.
Whilst India lost the game, the pair put on a partnership of 126 runs and stamped their authority on the game. That led to many a century partnerships by the left hand-right hand opening combo. The coach of the Indian team at the time felt that Ganguly was a talented young player who was wasted down the order and liked the ball coming onto the bat.
The duo went on to make 8227 runs together, whilst no one else even crossed 6000 runs and put together 21 century stands which is also a record. It must be noted that when they started batting together in 1996, every team had a quality new ball attack, be it Wasim-Waqar, Pollock-Donald, McGrath-Gillespie or Ambrose-Walsh.
